Silver Medals all Round

St Mary’s Year 4/5 boy’s football team

St Mary’s Year 4/5 boy’s football team entered the Basingstoke School’s Football Tournament, held at the War Memorial Park on Monday 18th September, for the first competition in this school year.

With a strong squad of 9 boys, we won our first match 7-0 against St John’s, a truly amazing start as each game was only 5 minutes each way. The next 2 matches were more challenging but the lads put on a splendid display, winning both games 1-0. This excellent result saw us comfortably through to the quarter finals, with Bramley as our opponents. A close match ensued, with St Mary’s maintaining their winning streak, ending the game 2-1 and reaching the semi-finals. The team in high spirits met King’s Furlong, where we powered in 3 magnificent shots, not conceding a goal.

This put us into the finals against Castle Hill, the toughest match of all. We saw nerves kick in and a momentary lapse of concentration from our team put us 1-0 down. We continued to fight on, narrowly missing 2 goals when the final whistle blew leaving us in the silver medal position.

A superb effort from all of our team and every member should be proud of their performance. Thank you to all the parents and helpers who supported us during the afternoon with lifts and encouragement.
