Girls Lift the Trophy

St Mary’s recently formed year 5/6 girl’s football team participated in the Basingstoke School’s Football Tournament, held at the War Memorial Park on Thursday 21st September.

During the first group stage matches, their confidence grew with wins in all games of 1-0, 3-0 (hat trick from Sophie) and another 3-0.

They then entered into the semi-finals against St John’s. This was a nail biting match which went into extra time, with a score of 1-1. Both sides were not prepared to concede anymore goals, so inevitably the game went to penalties. Three girls were chosen for this challenging task, but with luck on our side we managed to reach the final where me met with Castle Hill.

Emma, feeling brave, took on the responsibility of goalie and with the support of all the team, St Mary’s did not concede any goals. Castle Hill fought a hard game which again, after extra ended time in a 0-0 draw. Pressure was now on, Sophie, Lily and Sarina who were selected to take the final penalties. The girls pulled together with cameraderie from all our players, who encouraged self-belief so that they believed that they could succeed and secure a win.

St Mary’s ended the tournament proudly lifting the trophy and ensuring their place in the County finals to be held on Friday October 6th.

Thank you to all parents, sisters, brothers, nans and all who supported us throughout this event
