St Mary's Hockey Team learn a valuable lesson!

You win some, you lose some!

On Thursday 25th January, the St Mary's hockey team travelled to Down Grange to take part in the third date of the Basingstoke School's Hockey League. Currently 8th in the league out of 16 teams, we knew the evening was going to be tough as we were scheduled to play 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 7th and we were missing forward Nick.

In the first game vs St Marks B, we started well, however a questionable umpiring decision meant that we conceded a goal which looked to have been hit in from outside the ‘D’ according to our defensive line, resulting in a 1-0 loss.

The second game followed immediately vs Hook A and we managed a draw. It seemed that luck was against us however as Alexis, whose speed and skill upfront proved challenging for the opposition’s defence, had a goal disallowed for being hit outside the ‘D’.

After a short break, we took on 2nd place North Waltham A, who pressed our defence well at hit outs. Defenders Thomas and Callum worked hard to keep them out of our ‘D’, however unfortunately we did concede by one goal.

In the final game, we came up against St Mark’s A who were undoubtedly stronger than their B team, scoring two goals in quick succession. Determined not to give them their third, Quin tracked back quickly and put his body on the line, colliding with their attacker and having to be subbed as a result. Great work!

Overall it was a disappointing night for the team, however we learnt a valuable lesson in that sometimes, decisions don’t go your way and it’s important to carry on regardless! We look forward to regrouping in training and coming back stronger on 22nd February!
