Church of England Junior School

Basingstoke Sports Awards

On Friday 23rd February...

On Friday 23rd February Miss Shore and Ms Welch attended the Basingstoke and Deane Sports Awards. This is always a lovely occasion celebrating the wealth of sport that is taking place at the highest level across our area. The first thing people were asked was to stand up if they had competed at county level and then if they had represented their country. Everyone was amazed at the number of people who had represented their country, in particular.

This year St Mary's had been nominated in two categories: junior school of the year and team of the year, for both our Table Tennis Team and the school as a whole. I am really proud to announce that once again we came away with the Junior School of the Year award, recognising all of the hard work put in by so many people to ensure that all of our children get the opportunity to take part in a wide variety of sports as well as competing for our school. The award was based on the 2016-17 academic year and so some of our highlights included: coming first in the Basingstoke and Deane schools medal table, competing at county level in ten different events and achieving the School Games Gold Mark.

What was also wonderful to see was twelve past and present pupils being nominated for a variety of awards including  kickboxing, archery, biathle, athletics as well as volunteering, to name but a few,

Always on the look out for new activities to inspire our children, we have now introduced Badminton into Year 4 and goal ball and sitting volley ball across the school.

Look out for more sports news in our regular reports.
