Hockey Team Success!

The team take 9 points from 3 games at Down Grange.

On Thursday 22nd February, the St Mary's hockey team travelled to Down Grange to take part in the fourth date of the Basingstoke School's Hockey League. On discovering we had slipped two positions down in the table to 10th out of 16 teams, we made ourselves a promise that we were going out to get 9 points out of our three fixtures that evening. We knew we couldn’t take anything for granted and we would have to pull together even more so as usual, especially as we were missing motivational midfielder Alexis.

In the first game vs St John’s B, we started positively and eventually the goals came, resulting in a 2-0 win to kick start the evening.

Next up was St John’s A which we knew would be tougher. We dominated possession playing high in the oppositions half thanks to the high supporting play from midfielders Adam and Thomas, and eventually hit the target, finishing with a 1-0 win.

In our final game, we played Merton B and with confidence high, we played our best hockey yet, ending with a 7-0 win. It was great to see such grit and determination from all the players, especially Charlie who suffered an injury chasing down a 50- 50 ball.

Hopefully this will help us to move further up the table, especially with improvements to our goal difference with a brace from Callum (2), a goal from Nick, a hat trick from Quin (3) and a haul from Adam (4).

We look forward to taking our renewed confidence into our final fixture date on the 15th March!
