Church of England Junior School

The tale of a Victorian boy

Year 3 have been working hard to perform a show based upon their learning last half term.

This is the bicentennial year plus two of the birth of Charles Dickens, the author of “Oliver Twist”. It seems fitting that we at St Mary’s Junior school, founded in the Victorian era, are carried out a theatrical production based upon the well loved novel.

In preparation we enjoyed reading a ladybird book of Oliver Twist which is a simplified version of Dickens original. We also watched the 1960’s film, ‘Oliver!’ The film wanders from the original story a little and it is a mixture of the two that we presented in February.

The story is a classic rags to riches tale with the inclusion of some of the well known and well loved songs from the film, now a West End show.

The children worked incredibly hard. Thank you for all the contributions in hearing songs at home, helping children learn lines and organising costumes too.

A special thanks go to the following people:

  • Mrs Chitty for giving her time and playing the piano for the show
  • Mrs Malone for orchestrating the music
  • Mrs O’Brien for creating the props
  • Tony Evans for setting up the stage & chairs
  • Miss Hammond for help with the box office

Also many thanks to the parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters who have helped learn lines, songs, actions and provided such super costumes too. Your partnership in this endeavour has been very much appreciated.
