Church of England Junior School

Athletics

An excellent start to the year for our indoor athletics team who won the 1st round of competition against Gt. Binfields, Rucstall, Marnel, South View, Sherborne St. John and Fairfields. This result ensured our place in the 2nd round which was held at Brighton Hill School, a challenge for Whitchurch, Overton, Oakley, St.John’s, St. Martin’s, Rucstall and Gt Binfields to stop us winning the event for the 5th time in a row. True to form, team work and skill confirmed we are the best in Basingstoke winning by 50 points.

Consequently we were selected to represent the town in the Hampshire County Schools Finals held at Fleming Park, Eastleigh. 25 schools took part who were winners from their local area including the IOW. This was a more advanced level but St. Mary’s stepped up to the mark displaying a creditable performance. We had a pleasant surprise when the results were read out, as our girls won the event which is a first time for our school at such a high level. The boys achieved excellent results throughout the day working as a team congratulating and cheering each other at all times. The attitude and behaviour from all of our pupils was exemplary resulting in the organiser coming across at the end to say how impressed she was at the respect shown by our team.

This underlines the achievement of St. Mary’s winning Junior Sports School of the Year at the Basingstoke Sports Awards hosted by the Apollo Hotel with the Mayor and Mayoress present.

The team were; Nathan, Cameron, Tom, Lewis, Tyreese, Sam, Hannah, Amy, Keleigh-Anne, Lucy, Harriet and Erin.
