Church of England Junior School

Cricketing success!

Fantastic performances by both the Year 6 Girls and Boys teams meant that St. Mary’s carried off the two winning trophies for the Basingstoke Schools Kwik Cricket competition on 16th June.

Fantastic performances by both the Year 6 Girls and Boys teams meant that St. Mary’s carried off the two winning trophies for the Basingstoke Schools Kwik Cricket competition on 16th June. This is the first time since the competitions have been in existence that any school has won both trophies in the same year.

The girls’ team were the first to taste victory when they defeated seven other schools, beating Oakley in the final. Magnificent batting, fielding and bowling was combined with an excellent team spirit and outstanding sportsmanship throughout. Well done to Madison, Phoebe, Evgenia, Katie, Abigail, Hridya, Ivana, Libby and Anaya.

Then, in the late afternoon, the boys’ team emulated the girls by winning their semi-final against St. Bede’s and crushing Oakley in the final. They had already played a number of games the previous week in order to reach the final stage. This was also an outstanding achievement as the boys’ tournament had to beat fifteen Junior Schools across Basingstoke. All the boys played a crucial role in their success and it was very gratifying to see superb skills being allied to excellent teamwork. Congratulations to Jamie, Piers, Ethan, Louis, William, Charlie, Sam, Adam, and Peter.

Both teams now progress to the County Final competition to be played at the Rose Bowl in Southampton (girls on the 29th June and the boys on 30th June).
