Year 5 2011-2012

Our Learning Journey

In Year 5 we have 6 topics, which give us interesting opportunities to continue our learning at St Mary's.

	Autumn 1:
	What makes a good spy?	'Our spy topic was so much fun. On spy day we got to go orienteering round Old Basing village. We also got to do lots of fun activities such as: pea shooting, going across the balance trail with a cup full of water, played with a parachute and kicked balls into target hoops. Also we got to make little potato men and added carrots, broccoli, cucumber, and sweet corn. As well as spy day we made some little spy people which we collaged. In art we hid some spy gadgets in our paintings inspired by Klee. We created a map for our spy stories, which were covered in coffee to make it look old.’ Sajan &Charlotte RRR link -Article 13 Children have the right to get and to share information, as long as the information is not damaging to them or to others.
	Autumn 2:
	Is there anybody out there?	RRR link-Article 17 Children have the right to reliable information from the mass media.
	Spring 1:
	Who were the Tudors?	The most educational part of our topic was going to the Mary Rose museum. We learnt how to load a cannon! We also learnt the different statuses in the Tudor period as well as what the clothes were made of. We were amazed at what the barbers surgeon used to heal the sailors additionally what injuries you could get in the Tudor navy. The thing we most enjoyed was when we had to guess what Tudor artefacts were used for and what they were. As well as that when we got back we had to write a letter to persuade Mrs Welch so she would let the year 4’s go on the Mary Rose trip. 	Spring 2:
	What would an Indian Celebration look like?	We are discovering this topic at the moment check back soon to find out what we did. RRR link -Article 14 Children have the right to think and believe what they want, and to practise their religion, as long as they are not stopping other people from enjoying their rights.
	Summer 1:
	Treasure Island	We are yet to discover this part of our learning journey. RRR link -Article 36 Children should be protected from any activities that could harm their development.
	Summer 2:
	What were Ancient Greek olympics like?	We are yet to discover this part of our learning journey. RRR link - Article 31 All children have a right to relax and play, and to join in a wide range of activities.
