Willow Weaving - a trip through time
As part of our history learning in year five we invited in "The Special Branch" to share with us how to weave brown willow.
We were able to make a willow fish on a rod which looked rather good, or not, depending on our dexterity. What it taught us was how hard it would have been to make everyday items out of willow in the past. We learnt that plastic, which is used for many everyday containers, has only been in use for about 60 years. In the past containers were made of pottery, glass, wood or willow. Now a days we tend to find that we only use willow for special items but once it was used for many many things.
