2016 - 17 Summary of Sporting Achievements

It’s been another fantastic year of PE and sport at St Mary’s and, for the second year running, our efforts were recognised by Basingstoke Sports Council when we were awarded ‘Sporting School of the Year’ at the annual Basingstoke Sports Award. We also entered the Sainsbury’s School Games mark, where we were proud to achieve the Silver Mark and are hoping to achieve Gold next year.

Once again we have taken part in a huge number of competitive sports in and around Basingstoke. We qualified for County Finals in football, individual table tennis, team table tennis, indoor athletics, cross country, girl’s cricket and boy’s cricket and in Hampshire County School Games, we had teams representing Basingstoke in quad kids athletics, tennis, basketball and netball. Thank you to all the additional adults who have volunteered to run sporting clubs, supported us with training and helped provide transport to and from competitions.

In addition to all the great things that have been happening outside of school, Mrs Hillyard has also organised various opportunities for children to participate in sports within school, in inter-class competitions. Every single child in the school took part in the howler throw and skipping competitions, year 6 also had a javelin throwing competition in which all children took part and every child had the opportunity to take part in an inter class football competition. We have also continued with providing a range of break and lunchtime activities, providing all children with an opportunity to participate without the competitive element, and we have also trained 10 play leaders who have also been organising a range of activities during lunchtimes. This year, we have also introduced ‘The Daily Mile’ whereby each class walks, jogs or runs for 15 minutes each day. The children’s fitness has improved hugely as a result and the children have thoroughly enjoyed challenging themselves each day to go further in the time given.

As always, there have been numerous sporting after school clubs on offer and over the course of the year 231 children have attended. The children’s enthusiasm for sport continues outside of school hours and 272 children currently attend some form of external sporting club with 51 competing at a much higher level; a few representing Basingstoke, Hampshire and even the South of England in their chosen field. We’ve even had some children representing England (street dance) and GB (biathle) who we are very proud of.

For the eighth consecutive year, we entered a team consisting of pupils, parents and staff into the Basingstoke 5km Race for life; raising money and keeping fit at the same time! In the summer term, 17 children from Euskirchen, Germany stayed with host families from St Mary’s as part of Basingstoke’s annual Festival of Sport.

After weeks of sunshine, it was typical that the rain came during Sports Day week, meaning that the lower school sports day had to take place over two days. Fortunately, we did have a dryer day on the reserve date so the lower school could finish their races and upper school could finally have their sports day. It was a close competition which saw red team come third with 1870 points, blue team come second with 1940 and congratulations to yellow team who took the trophy for the second year in a row with 1960! The children demonstrated fantastic sportsmanship throughout the day and we witnessed excellent performances in the track and throwing events. Thank you to all the pupils who helped run these events.
