Uganda Day 2018

Following a visit to our link school in Mityana, by members of the Old Basing community,  we held a day to celebrate our friendship with the community of Katakala school.

Uganda day was a great success at St Mary's this year, with children taking part in a variety of events during the day. Year 3 were bury learning all about Uganda then writing information leaflets about this amazing country. They finished their day by creating silhouettes of the landscape in water colour. Dickens Class were particularly fortunate to have an expert to help them, as their teacher, Miss Sherlock, has lived in Uganda for a year!

Year 4 played some outdoor maths games, just as Ugandan children might do in Katakala. They also found out facts about the geography of the country and used folk art as inspiration to make their own creations in water colour.

Year 5 were lucky enough to join Year 1, at Old Basing Infant School, who were being taught a Ugandan numbers and days of the week lesson by Miss McCarley. The lesson was conducted just as it would be in Katakala - ninety children, incomplete silence - can you imagine! The children tried some maize porridge, a first time experience for all the children. Year 5 also used Ugandan bark cloth to paint traditional Ugandan everyday scenes in vivid colours. The results were fantastic!
