Education for All – An Oxfam Visit

On Friday 7th September 2012 Oxfam, which is a charity that goes round helping over 70 countries, came to visit us.

Mrs Clifford came from Oxfam to do an assembly and tell us about their campaign called “Education for all”.  She then did some more work with year 5.  Oxfam are raising money for children to go to school because we all have a right to an education.  Some people in some parts of the world can’t afford the necessities that they need and this includes education.

Oxfam have 3 main areas of work.  Firstly they help in disasters and crises e.g. floods.  Secondly they help with development in countries and finally they campaign for human rights.

The Millennium Goals

We found out that in the year 2000 lots of important countries signed up to the millennium goals agreeing that every child in the world by 2015 will have an education.  Click here for more.  In 2000, 110 million children did not go to school.  Now, 12 years later there are 70 million children still not at school – so things have got better for 40 million children but we are still not there.

Finally we discussed why school is a good thing and heard about reasons why other children might be stopped from going to school or have a reason not to go.

We came to school dressed in our own clothes and gave £1 as a donation.  This money will go to Oxfam’s education for all campaign.  You can read more here - http://www.sendmyfriend.org/
