Year 4 Viking Day

On Thursday 15th November, Year 4 enjoyed a very busy and exciting Viking Day.

The children and their parents had worked really hard to create some amazing outfits and it felt like St. Mary’s had been invaded!  Activities included making Viking longship models and learning all about runes (Viking writing). Moreover, one of the highlights of the day was cooking Viking honey and oat cakes; the children delighted in weighing and measuring all the ingredients and then baking them in the school ovens.  The day culminated in the children ‘sailing’ across the sea (school field) in 3 longships, whilst chanting their war cries extremely loudly!  When they arrived on the ‘shore’, the Britons had scarpered but had left behind a delicious tray of nourishment (honey and oat cakes) which all the Year 4 Vikings devoured with immense pleasure.
