At St Mary’s, art is all about giving children the freedom to express themselves and the confidence to explore their creativity. We believe every child is an artist and our classrooms are places where ideas come alive in colour, texture and form. From Year 3 to Year 6, pupils go on an exciting journey, building skills in painting, sculpture, printing and drawing. At the start of Year 3, they experiment with bold lines and simple shapes, learning how to mix colours and create patterns. As they move through the school, their work becomes more detailed and thoughtful; they add tone and texture to drawings, create layered prints and shape clay into sculptures linked to their topics such as Roman Helmets. By Year 6, children are confidently using form and perspective to bring their ideas to life.
Our art journey always begins with inspiration. Children explore the work of artists, discovering different styles and techniques. They then imitate aspects of these works to understand how they were created, before planning their own unique ideas. Getting stuck in is the best part! Pupils have the licence to create, experiment, and express themselves freely. Finally, they reflect on their work, thinking about what went well and what they might do differently next time. This process helps children grow not just as artists, but as creative thinkers who are proud of their individuality. Creativity is a core Christian value at St Mary's and art is a great subject to show this.
